Having realized my addiction to single-use plastic, I decided to act on it. So I took on a challenge: keep track of every single piece of plastic I acquired and used up, lower plastic consumption week by week, and reach the minimum use of single-use plastic in the final week within 16 weeks. The challenge started on Jan 17, 2020 and ended on May 8, 2020.
Every pieces of plastic is rated and color coded into three categories according to their recyclability:
Hard to recycle.
Cannot be recycled at almost all municipal recycling program. Might be recycled at some TerraCycle programs.
Base material is recyclable but cannot be successfully recycled at municipal recycling program due to certain properties.
May need additional handling or store drop-off.
Easy to recycle in NYC.
Base material can be recycled at most municipal recycling programs across the U.S.
Note that the resin code on the plastic does NOT indicate its recyclability. Plastic recyclability is accessed according to NYC's municipal recycling program and The APR Plastic Recyclability Design Guide. If you live in other region in the U.S. , please see "Resources " for more info.
